Emergency Care

Thankfully, in orthodontics, there are very few true emergencies. At times, discomfort and urgencies do arise, though, and we are here to assist you through those situations.

Handling Injuries

If you experience an injury to your mouth or teeth during orthodontic treatment, follow these steps:

  1. Immediate Care:

    • Apply Ice: Reduce swelling by applying ice to the injured area.
    • Contact Your Dentist: Reach out to your regular dentist as soon as possible, as they may need to take an x-ray to assess the injury.
  2. Types of Injuries:

    • Displaced, Knocked Out, or Fractured Teeth: It’s best to contact your family dentist first for treatment, as they have the necessary materials and anesthesia. After you’ve been seen by your general dentist, we can address any issues with your orthodontic appliances.
    • Dislodged or Displaced Appliances: Once you’ve received initial care from your general dentist, we can schedule an appointment to replace or adjust the appliances, depending on your comfort level.

Managing Appliance Issues

If your orthodontic appliances become damaged or uncomfortable, here’s what to do:

  1. Handling Common Issues:

    • Irritating Ligature Wire: Cover it with wax or sugarless chewing gum, or gently tuck it under the archwire with a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
    • Loose Appliance or Bracket: If you notice a loose appliance or bracket, it can usually be left in place until your scheduled appointment. Contact our office during patient hours to let us know about the situation, and we will determine if it can wait or if you need to come in to get it repaired sooner.
    • Broken or Poking Archwire: You may be able to gently bend it back into place with a pencil eraser or cut it with nail clippers. If the issue persists or causes discomfort, call or text our office during patient hours and we will get you in to remedy the problem ASAP.
